HOW TO BECOME A REALTOR® IN ALBERTA

STEP 1

Before starting your real estate career in Alberta, you must meet RECA’s eligibility requirements. You need to be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident with a Canadian High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Create your MyRECA account, submit the Eligibility Application ,there's a fee around $350 subject to change, upload a professional photo and government ID, and provide proof of education.

Once approved, you’ll receive your RECA Learners ID number, which is required before buying your first real estate licensing course in Alberta.

STEP 2

you must complete RECA-approved education such as ARETA. Start with the Fundamentals of Real Estate course (online, self-paced), then pass the Fundamentals Exam (70%+ within 3 months).

Next, choose a Practice Course — Residential, Commercial, Rural, or Property Management — and pass the exam (70%+). Using the RECA Practice Exam is highly recommended for success.

Once both exams are passed, your real estate education in Alberta is complete, and you’re ready to move on to licensing.

STEP 3

The final step to becoming a licensed REALTOR® in Alberta starts with a Criminal Record Check (with fingerprinting, ~$100 subject to change). Once approved by RECA, you must choose a brokerage — your broker will guide you through the licensing process in MyRECA.

Next, submit your license application, pay your licensing fees (RECA,AREA,CREA), and board membership (CREB, RAE etc.) about $2,000–$4,000.

When RECA issues your license, you can officially start working as a real estate agent in Alberta. From start to finish, the full process takes about 5–9 months and costs around $6,000–$8,000.
